Easy to use. Brings out the beautiful grain in wood stocksBoiled Linseed Oil is excellent for finishing and maintaining military gunstocks. Boiled Linseed oil has been used on gunstocks for years. Boiled Linseed Oil is a drying oil extracted from the seed of the flax plant and processed with special additives, which shorten its drying time, usually 12 to 18 hours depending on conditions. It soaks into the wood, not on the surface, and dries to a nice, matt finish. Linseed oil is available in several forms. Unrefined, it's called raw linseed oil, which is rarely used on wood because it dries so slowly. Finishers long ago discovered that by boiling the oil, the resulting product was thicker and dried more quickly. Even though linseed oil that has actually been boiled is still available -- it's called heat-treated or polymerized oil -- most of the Boiled Linseed Oil sold these days is raw oil that has been mixed with chemical additives to speed up the drying time. For stock finishing Boiled Linseed Oil is a very good choice and is easy to work with. Directions Apply the oil with a cloth and rub well into the wood. Boiled Linseed Oil must penetrate the surface of the wood in order to completely dry. Any excess oil remaining on the surface after application should be removed by wiping with a clean, dry cloth. An excessive buildup of Linseed Oil will cause a gummy residue or blotchy finish to form on the surface of the wood. Leave at least 24 hours between applications. NOTE: Oil soaked rags can be dangerous because of spontaneous combustion. Used rags should be washed immediately or stored in water filled containers. Never leave oil soaked rags unattended.
