Picture in the news recently of a foriegn country destroying US M1 Garands.

Several years ago the “powers that be” decided that the M1 garand, M1 carbine, B.A.R & Thompson, along with other surplus military firearms, were to be destroyed. Many M1 garands and M1 Carbines had their stocks stripped off and the metal parts were cut with a torch or saw and sold for scrap by weight. Some of the stocks were sold in lots and some were destroyed outright. Alot of NOS (New, Old Stock) parts and slings were in this group as well, including thousands of unissued 1903A3 Remington buttplates and 1903A3 Remington bands.

An older gentleman bought several railroad cars full of the scrap metal and stocks. He was a machine gun collector so over the years he took the salvaged items for the BAR, Thompson etc and used, traded and sold them, The M1 Carbine parts, M1 Garand parts and accessories have sat in a warehouse in NC for years. The stocks in this group were primarily new/like new condition, post war Springfield and Harrington & Richardson. These stocks were to be destroyed, so no care was taken in their storage. They were tossed into crates with no regard for their condition. Many, even though from new rifles, have dents and dings as a result. I have sold several hundred over the last few years and soon they will be gone.

The M1 carbine stocks, 1903 and 1903A3 stocks were in the same excellent condition. They sold quickly.

I have been salvaging as many items as I can from these cut M1 Carbine barreled receivers. Most have early features such as type 1 flip sights, Type 1 & 2 bands, and all types of slides. I salvage the items that are still operational, clean them up and soak them in oil. The deal I have with the gentleman is that I return all cut receiver stubbs, barrel stubbs etc. So that he can sell them to the scrap yard for the metal weight. I will not sell any pieces of the scrap receivers.

The Collector Source deals primarily with post war ,collector grade, M1 garand stocks but also has many other military surplus items from time to time available. We have  an extensive section of USGI accessories such as Ruptured cartridge Extractors, M1 Garand web slings and many more hard to find items. These items used to be very plentiful on the surplus market. Supplies of these items have been "drying up" and many cheaply made reproductions are appearing for sale.
