Several years ago the “powers that be” decided that the M1 garand along with other surplus military firearms were to be destroyed. Many M1 garands had their stocks stripped off and the metal parts were sent through “captain crunch” (an industrial metal shredder), cut up into little pieces, and sold for scrap. Some of the stocks were sold in lots and some were destroyed outright.

In 2002 a unique opportunity was found. A storage building full of these surplus stocks was found where they had been stored since they were purchased at a Government surplus sale. The stocks in this group were primarily new/like new condition, post war Springfield and Harrington & Richardson. These stocks were to be destroyed, so no care was taken in their storage. They were tossed into crates with no regard for their condition. Many, even though from new rifles, have dents and dings as a result.
